What are Split Transactions?

A split transaction is the name given to a transaction which covers multiple categories, because the transaction is literally split between them.

For example, an employee goes on a business trip and incurs expenses for hotel costs and travel. You reimburse them for these costs in one payment, but then need to split that payment into the relevant hotel and travel categories for your own records.

How to show Split Transactions in Pandle

To make the process easier, Pandle has a 'Split Transaction' feature.

You'll see the 'Split Transaction' option when entering transactions into Pandle as part of your banking.

In the example below we're entering a new banking transaction into a cash account in Pandle. The transaction shows a payment to an employee to reimburse them for the costs of a business trip. You can split any types of transaction, such as a payment to a supplier.

Click the 'Split Transaction' button, which is in the 'Actions' column.

This opens the pop-up 'Splits' screen, where you can enter the different categories for this transaction.

Click the 'Currency For Splits' box.

Select the currency for the split transaction from the dropdown menu. This will default to the base currency that you use in Pandle, or for the bank account or particular invoice.

Use the Category dropdown menu to select the correct category for each transaction. In our example we are splitting the transaction between 'hotels', and 'travel and subsistence'.

Enter a description for each line.

Enter the amount to be allocated to each category. The total amount must be the same as the transaction amount. You can choose different tax codes for each line of the split if you need to.

  • Click 'Add New Row' to add another line to the split, in order to split the transaction between more categories.

  • Click 'Remove This Row' to remove a line from the split.

Click 'Save' to make your changes, or 'Unsplit' to return to the transaction without splitting.

How do I edit or 'unsplit' a transaction

Click the 'Split Transaction' button next to a transaction to edit an existing split, or to remove the split between categories entirely.

Click the 'Split Transaction' button, which is in the 'Actions' column.

Edit each row individually and save your changes, or click 'Unsplit' to remove all entries and re-enter the transaction without the split.

Viewing Split Transactions

When you view your transactions in Pandle, the category for split transactions will show 'SPLIT'.

When you look at categories, the parts of transactions which have been split will show as normal.

What about invoicing?

Split transactions are also available for customer invoices, supplier invoices, and batch customer invoices (invoices entered into Pandle, not created in Pandle).
